Hi Davy,
Finally found the photo I was on about. The photo is titled S. I. Harvey’s select so I guess this was John Harvey’s selections but I’m afraid I don’t have much info on why the team was put together. My neighbour (Anne “Shelia” Pamplin) reckons the game was on too boost morale for the soldiers.
Her husband is George Pamplin (2nd from right, front row). He was stationed in India in a Physical Training camp helping soldiers get back to full fitness after war injuries.
As a side story to this photo, they met in 1946. Shortly after getting engaged a message was put in the Sunday post by Sgt I. Powell (2nd from left front row) asking George to come down south to play for the team he was with at that time. I’ve looked on Wikipedia and it appears he was still at QPR (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivor_Powell). George politely declined as he was setting up home in Edinburgh with Sheila.
George worked on the railway in Edinburgh and spent most of his married life living in Northfield. He passed away back in the early 80’s.
I’ve also attached a scan of the back as it has been signed. I can make out Tommy Walkers signature and it looks like “Johnny” that signed will be John Harvey. I do know that George maintained his friendship with Tommy on return from the war and was a guest of his at Tynecastle many times.
Cheers
Dave
