Hibs fans to turn backs on derby day Mercer tribute

ANDREW PICKEN

HIBS fans are to snub a tribute to the late Hearts chairman Wallace Mercer during Saturday's derby match at Tynecastle.

Some of Hibs' 4000-strong travelling support will turn their backs to the pitch during a minute of applause intended to commemorate Mr Mercer who died of liver cancer in hospital last week.

Hearts fans today described the planned protest as disrespectful and Hibs officials are appealing to fans not to disrupt the tribute.

The protest comes as police confirm they will beef up security for the sold-out match. The backlash against Mr Mercer, who was chairman of Hearts from 1981 to 1994, stems from his controversial bid to take over Hibs in 1990.

The move sparked mass protests and supporters of both clubs launched the Hands off Hibs campaign, which forced Mr Mercer to abandon his plans and led to businessman Sir Tom Farmer stepping in to save Hibs after they went into receivership. Mr Mercer received death threats from angry Hibs fans.

Hearts officials have planned the minute's applause to let fans show their appreciation for Mr Mercer, credited with saving the Gorgie club from financial ruin.

Tom Watson, of the Ace of Hearts supporters club, said: "It is a bit disrespectful. I just hope it doesn't lead to any trouble and, with any luck, the Hibs fans will keep their backs to the pitch for the whole game."

A Hibs spokesman said: " We will co-operate with whatever tribute Hearts feel is appropriate to commemorate Mr Mercer. We would hope fans would do nothing to disrupt it."
