Match Preview: Hearts V Celtic

The league maybe wrapped up but there are still plenty of incentives in this top of the table clash. For Hearts, a win would almost seal 2nd place and with that, a chance of a crack at the Champions League. Lose however, and Rangers could be only a point behind, with a final day match at Ibrox looming.

The previous league encounters this season have been filled with controversy and drama. When the sides first met in October, Hearts were top and came from behind to earn a 1-1 at Parkhead, a game which turned out to be George Burley’s last in charge.

The clash at Tynecastle on New Years Day caused arguably a pivotal moment in the title race as Celtic came back from 2-0 to win 3-2, after the dismissal of Hearts Greek defender Takis Fyssas.

Hearts 2nd place aspirations took a knock with their 2-1 derby defeat at Hibernian last weekend. Some fans pointed to an increasingly unsettled line up, with 2 players making their first starts these season, as well as inspirational captain Steven Pressley missing out through injury.

Paranoid Rangers fans may fear the likelihood of Celtic “lying” down, in order to hinder their own Champions League aspirations. The truth is, in the three league encounters this season, Hearts have taken the game to Celtic and had the best of the possession in the match at the start of the month, which saw Celtic crowned SPL champions.

It may have been stated many times previously but the chance of Hearts success on Sunday depends on the team that takes to the field. It would certainly seem unwise in defence to pitch in inexperienced Ibrahim Tall with youngsters Christophe Berra and Lee Wallace again.

It seems unlikely Andy Webster will return, due to the statements in the press earlier this week, fans best hope must be the return to fitness of Fyssas and Pressley. Rudi Skacel was also omitted this week, and although his performances appear to have waned in recent months, he has the individual skill to win games and could prove vital.

Gordon Strachan’s team selection will be far less troubled as there is little left to decide in Celtic’s season, so expect a few fringe players to get a run out. Hearts have the players to take on Celtic, they have proved that earlier this season, it just depends whether those players are on the field.
