JOSE'S ALL SET TO QUIT-ONGO

Dumbarton 2 East Stirling 0
By Matthew Clark

DUMBARTON trialist Jose Quitongo scored in the win over East Stirling and then revealed his desire to return to Portugal after 12 years in Scotland.

The popular winger hit the headlines during the summer when he almost made Angola's World Cup squad for Germany 2006 and his whirlwind football journey continued on Saturday when he turned out for Sons.

Quitongo, 31, who had his dreams shattered because of a passport issue, strolled onto the Strathclyde Homes pitch sporting a headband that would have had you believe he was ready for a first-round clash at SW19 never mind a Division Three meeting with the Shire.

Seconds later he had the Dumb art on fans on their feet as he tried to waltz his way through the visiting defence but, unfortunately on this occasion, Quitongo tripped over himself.

It's the kind of show Scottish fans have grown to love him for but after 12 years on Scottish soil which have included SPL spells with Kilmarnock and Hearts, Quitongo admitted his thoughts are now turning to Portugal.

He said: "I was disappointed I didn't make it to the World Cup but it gave me a chance to see my family back in Angola who I haven't seen for a long time.

"I'd be happy to stay at Dumbarton for a short time but my house is up for sale and once it's sold I am definitely going home to Portugal. I'm trying to get a club over there but I've loved my time in Scotland and I would always come back as I've got a lot of friends here."'

Quitongo's entry brightened up an otherwise drab game and Dumbarton's plans were unsettled when striker John Gemmell hobbled off with a foot injury in 21 minutes to be replaced by Craig Winter.

Nevertheless, they went in front

minutes later when David Bagan collected the ball just outside the box and rifled an unstoppable shot into the top corner of the net.

Bagan was orchestrating every flowing move through the midfield and after being rescued from a spell with Irvine Meadow it's hard to believe this one-time Scotland Under-21 star is now showcasing his talents in Division Three.

Shire looked much improved from the side which made 10th spot in the division their home for so long but they huffed and puffed without really ever threatening.

Quitongo entered the fray on 64 minutes and 15 minutes from time Chris Gentile broke forward and released the little winger who had time to pick his spot and drive the ball in off the post.

Sons boss Gerry McCabe is enjoying his unbeaten start to the season and said: "I was pleased with the clean sheet and I am delighted with the three points.

"We needed a lift from somewhere to give us that spark again and Jose provided it. He is entertaining and we're always looking for players to strengthen the squad."

Shire gaffer GordonWylde said: "I don't think there was much between the two teams but basic errors cost us the points.

"We caused our own problems and we're lacking a killer touch at the moment."
