McCann urges fans to accept new role

ALAN PATTULLO

NEIL McCann has asked Hearts fans to understand the nature of the new role he has been asked to perform and not expect his dashing wing play of old in every match.

McCann, in his second spell at Tynecastle, has been a target for recent criticism but has pleaded for some sympathy from the stands. He has also sought reassurances from coach Valdas Ivanauskas who has instructed the player to curb his natural attacking instincts.

"I have been asked to play a more disciplined role," said McCann, who was jeered by a section of the crowd when replaced against Falkirk last month. "It hasn't been Neil McCann playing as a winger, or playing as a front three player. I have been trying to help my full-back and get forward. It's a tiring shift."

He lines up at Alloa Athletic tonight in a CIS Insurance Cup match Hearts dare not lose.

McCann is still finding his match fitness and admits some of the criticism has stung him, particularly in view of the six-month lay-off he endured after injuring his knee just 20 minutes into his return to Hearts last January.

"It's been a long haul coming back," he said. "I missed pre-season, and I know a section of the fans have been giving me some stick. That's hurtful in a way because you are trying your best.

"When you are coming off you can hear some of the jeers. The supporters are entitled to their opinion. It's not through lack of trying on my part. If I am sacrificing my natural game for the benefit of the team then I will do that.

"It would be nice if the fans could understand that, but I also understand where they are coming from. My game is about creating chances, and I still like doing that. I am still so hungry to win things. I have ten winner's medals and I am not finished yet."
