Alloa Athletic 0-4 Hearts

Hearts striker Juho Makela bagged a hat-trick as Alloa Athletic were swept aside in the CIS Insurance Cup.

The Finn, making a rare start, headed home the opener from a Takis Fyssas delivery after 33 minutes.

Makela then slotted in a shot just seconds after the interval, following a good cross from Neil McCann.

Chris Townsley was sent off for the home side before Makela found the net with another strike and Bruno Aguiar added a fantastic lob from 30 yards.

Hearts fielded a completely different starting XI to the one that beat Motherwell on Sunday, with Kestutis Ivaskevicius making his debut and goalkeeper Steven Banks getting a rare outing.

But the Edinburgh side could still boast a powerful team and Second Division Alloa were no match for them over the course of 90 minutes.

Makela had the Jambos' first sight of goal after eight minutes but his 20-yard shot flew a foot wide.

Hearts struggled to find an early rhythm and Alloa worked the next chance midway through the half, but Graham Brown headed wide.

Former Hearts player Robert Sloan then saw a 25-yard drive saved by Banks.

The visitors took the lead when the unmarked Makela headed home a Fyssas cross.

Two minutes later, the Greek defender almost scored himself after McCann broke forward and played him in but teh Greek shot over under pressure.

Thirty seconds after the re-start Makela slotted home after a brilliant Neil McCann through ball.

The goalscorer set up Roman Bednar five minutes later and he squared to McCann but Steven McKeown cleared off the line.

Alloa had the Edinburgh side on the back foot for a 15 minute spell but struggled to create any clear chances.

Their best opportunity came with 12 minutes left when a far-post cross fell for Ross Hamilton.

The midfielder looped a header over Banks but sub Alan Lithgow cleared off the goal-line.

Townsley was sent off for a second yellow card in the 79th minute following a foul on Andrius Velicka.

Makela killed the game off three minutes after a clever Velicka flick. His first effort was well saved but the Finn rolled home the rebound.

Aguiar rounded off the comfortable win with a glorious chip from distance in the 88th minute.
