Kyle the hero as Hearts front foot first footers

From Hearts Media at Tynecastle Stadium

The first New Year's Day Derby in thirteen years wasn't a disappointment for the Hearts fans as the Jambos were eventual 1-0 winners against Hibs at Tynecastle.

The Gorgie faithful had to wait until the 86th minute of the match for the winning goal but they couldn't have cared when it came, as another three points were secured in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League and the much heralded undefeated run continued.

Hearts made one change to the team which defeated St Mirren midweek. Ryan Stevenson dropped to the bench to be replaced by Rudi Skacel.

The atmosphere at Tynecastle before the game was electric, both sets of fans were voicing their support, wanting their side to give them bragging rights in the city.

The game got off to the usual derby start with both sides battling for every ball and in the second minute of the game Hibs got a free kick right on the edge of the penalty box when Ian Black brought down Valdas Trakys. Derek Riordan stepped up and curled in a shot which was safely held by Jamie MacDonald.

A first realflash point in the game came in the sixth minute when Ian Murray and Ian Black both jumped for a ball, Murray's elbow caught Black on the neck, knocking the midfielder out cold. The Hibs captain was only given a yellow card and while Black got treatment on the pitch for a couple minutes, he bravely continued on with the match.

The Jambos had a great chance to take the lead in the 14th minute when Skacel crossed a ball in from the left, it went across the box and both Kevin Kyle and Calum Elliot just failed to connect with the ball.

Neither team was getting the chance to settle with players being hustled at every opportunity, though Hearts were pushing forward slightly more than their rivals, though either side looked capable of opening the scoring.

In the 30th minute Skacel unleashed an ambitious shot from thirty yards out but his shot went wide of goal.

Just a minute later the ball broke for Templeton down the wing, the youngster used his fast footwork to make his way into the box, but Francis Dickoh made a brilliant tackle to stop his run, it then broke for Kyle but his shot went over the bar.

Hearts missed another goad opportunity to take the lead 5 minutes before half time when Skacel swung in a corner from the left. The ball fired across the Hibs box and just needed a touch for it to be in the back of the net, however no maroon shirt managed to get near it.

Hibs got a corner in injury time of the first half, Riordan swung the ball in and it fell to Dickoh who found himself in space, he unleashed a powerful shot but it went wide of MacDonald's right hand post.

Hearts still had another good chance to take the lead when MacDonald's kick found it's way to Skacel, he shot from just outside the box but it was well held by Hibs keeper Mark Brown.

The Jambos started the second half how they ended the first, attacking the Hibs goal. Calum Elliot was looking lively up front, chasing everything and being involved in a lot of the play.

Hearts almost opened the scoring 8 minutes into the second half, Zaliukus got his head on the end of an Ian Black corner and it looked to be goal bound until Steven Thicot headed it off the line.

The home side continued to push forward but Hibs were proving hard to break down with every player back defending.

In the 61st minute David Templeton got the ball out on the right and his tricky footwork confused the Hibs defence and he was fouled right on the edge of the box. Skacel curled in a brilliant ball which Brown got his fingertips to it and pushed it on to the bar.

Hibs were starting to come into the game a bit more mid-way through the second half. In the 68th minute Derek Riordan swung in a free kick to the back post, it was met by Francis Dickoh who slid in but his shot went behind for a goal kick.

The visitors came close to opening the scoring in the 75th minute when on the break they found themselves with three attackers against two defenders. Substitute Colin Nish found himself in space at the back post the ball fell to him but his shot went wide of MacDonald's right hand post.

It was Hearts who had the next best chance of the game, in the 82nd minute a shot from Ian Black was blocked in the box, it was then hit back in and again it was blocked on the line. A minute later the ball broke to Rudi Skacel in the middle of the park, he passed it out to sub Novikovas on the left who crossed in for fellow sub Gary Glen, the young striker seemed certain to score but somehow the ball went wide.

The deadlock was finally broken for the Jambos four minutes from time when Novikovas got the ball on the left. The young Lithuanian skipped past two Hibs defenders, he then crossed the ball to the back post where Kevin Kyle was on hand to head it into the Hibs net.

Tynecastle erupted as the big striker ran away to celebrate his tenth goal of the season.

Just a minute after the re-start Hibs were shouting for a penalty after they claimed a ball into the box was blocked by the arm of Bouzid. The referee didn't think a foul had taken place and allowed play to continue.

Three minutes of time was added on to the match and it was a chance for the Hearts fans to let their voices be heard as they enjoyed the New Year's Day victory over their bitter rivals Hibs.
