Dundee Utd 2 - 1 Hearts

Dundee United beat Hearts as both sides played out the last game of their season in entertaining style.

United's David Goodwillie opened with an opportunist strike from close-range in the 22nd minute.

Hearts replied as Gary Glen had to squat low to head the ball goalwards from a David Templeton free-kick.

The home side regained the lead after 71 minutes with a strike from Jon Daly, who made the most of a slack clearance from Hearts defender Ismael Bouzid.

Third-place Hearts and Dundee United in fourth had already clinched their final positions in the Scottish Premier League but United's win means the closing gap between the clubs stands at two points.

Hearts pressed from the start with Eggert Jonsson making an early attempt on goal but the defender hit it straight at United keeper Dusan Pernis for an easy save.

At the other end, Marian Kello made a magnificent block from a Goodwillie shot from inside the box.

Andy Driver tweaked his groin and left the field early, with the Hearts winger due for an operation in the close season and being replaced by Jason Thomson.

A real chance for Hearts was missed when Glen could not convert Craig Thomson's delivery.

And, moments later, United took the lead out of nothing.

A cross directed into the Hearts box was missed by Johnny Russell but Goodwillie made no mistake as he prodded the ball into the net.

Nine minutes later Hearts equalised as Templeton's free-kick was met by the Glen, who stooped low to head home.

Templeton, from 30 yards out, then thundered a shot goalwards but Pernis touched over.

There was another terrific long distance effort moments later as United's Craig Conway cut in from the left and powered the ball a yard over the Hearts bar.

After the restart Goodwillie, on the right-hand side of the box, laid off to Mihael Kovacevic and the defender forced a good save from Kello.

A Kello throw-out was then intercepted and played to Goodwillie, who took the ball in his stride only to shoot half a yard wide of the post

Prince Buaben, after some good crisp play, turned the ball onto his weaker side and unleashed a shot from 20 yards that rose over the visitors' bar.

Templeton could have given Hearts the lead had it not been for the quick reactions of United keeper Pernis. The Hearts midfielder drove through one-on-one with the Slovakian, who wasted no time in coming out to clear the danger.

United's second came from a long cross-field ball from right to left by Sean Dillon that was headed on by Jon Daly and Hearts defender Bouzid tried to clear.

But Daly pounced on the defender's weak attempt and struck the ball past Kello.

Hearts had a chance to equalise right at the end as Templeton fizzed a ball across goal but his team-mates could not get on the end of it.
