Hearts lost their final match of the season 2-1 to Dundee Utd but they're still heading for a European adventure.

Goals from Goodwillie and Glen in the first half meant it was all even at half-time but a strike from Jon Daly in the second 45 gave Utd all three points.

Seven changes were made by Jefferies for the final encounter of the season with Zaliukus, Webster and Wallace missing out through injury. It was also worth noting that out of the 18 man squad, 14 of the players were from Hearts youth Academy.

Thought it was a match with nothing to play for Hearts started brightly, supported by the large travelling support and Eggert Jonsson almost gave them something to cheer in the 7th minute but his long range effort was well held.

Dundee Utd were next with shot at goal. The ball found its way to David Goodwillie in the box in the 11th minute but his close range effort was well pushed clear by an alert Kello.

Hearts were forced into an early substitution when Andrew Driver left the park injured, he was replaced by Jason Thomson who slotted in at left back and Craig Thomson pushed up the park.

As Hearts were re-shaping Utd opened the scoring in the 21st minute. A long ball in from Conway found Goodwillie in the box and he kept his shot low to fire it past Kello.

The Jambos weren't behind for too long and after a free kick effort from Craig Thomson in the 25th minute was well held by Pernis they equalised in the 31st minute. David Templeton crossed the ball into the box and a glancing header from Gary Glen found its way into the net to take the score to 1-1.

Hearts almost took the lead a couple minutes later thanks to a long range effort from Craig Thomson. He found himself in space about 30 yards out and his dipping shot was tipped over the bar.

Neither side was playing the match as if it was the final game with nothing at stake, Craig Conway was next with a long range effort but his powerful shot went just over the bar.

Both sides started the second half brightly, looking to try and take the lead, Utd came close in the 53rd minute when Goodwillie fired a powerful shot across goal but it went wide of Kello's left hand post.

Hearts were pushing forward for a second, but were struggling to threaten Pernis' goal - it was Dundee Utd who looked most likely to take the lead.

In the 65th minute though Hearts came close to taking the lead for the first time in the match, Glen played a great ball through to Templeton who chased as Pernis came out his goal. He got there first and tried to chip the keeper but he managed to block the shot.

In the 71st minute Utd took the lead again. Hearts failed to clear a long ball and Jon Daly latched onto the lose ball at the edge of the box and fired it low past Kello.

Two minutes later Hearts were close to equalising after some good play form David Templeton. He skipped past two Utd players and fired in a low shot which Pernis spilled but held on his second attempt.

Jefferies used the match as an opportunity to give Jason Holt his first-team debut. It topped off a good couple weeks for the 18 year old. He scored for Scotland U19's last week and was named Clydesdale Bank Premier League U19 player of the season. Fellow U19 player David Smith was also handed his debut.
