Player of the Year Awards

Blackie wins big

07.05.2012

Ian Black was the big winner earlier tonight as Hearts players and fans celebrated the Player of the Year Awards.

The star-studded event, hosted by Scott Wilson, took place in the Gorgie Suite and there were winners aplenty with Blackie clinching the Heart of Midlothian Former Players' Association Goal of the Year and the Supporters' Player of the Year, sponsored by Wonga.

The midfield maestro's fantastic strike against Rangers at Ibrox in March saw him win the award for best goal, while fans voted in their thousands on the Hearts website, choosing Blackie as their star man this year.

As fans mingled with first-team players and coaching staff, those present were treated to a sublime four-course meal and a complimentary bar. Guest speaker Paul Reid brought the house down with his impresions of the good and the great of the footballing world and a charity auction took place, as did a raffle.

But there were also more awards to be dished out, with Jamie MacDonald winning the G4S Save of the Year for his point-blank stop from Celtic's Charlie Mulgrew in the Scottish Cup semi-final at Hampden last month.

That same game was also the subject of the next award. Craig Beattie, and his goal celebration after slotting home his last minute match-winning penalty, lifted the Fosters Most Memorable Moment of the Year Award.

The BIg Hearts Community Award was presented next to Ryan McGowan. The young Aussie defender was rewarded for his dedication off the pitch as well as on it, having attended several coaching and community events in his spare time.

There was one more award to be presented, complimenting the Supporters' Player of the Year gong was the Players' Player of the Year Award. The Hearts stars had been voting all week prior to the event, and they chose stand-out defender Andrew Webster as their top colleague. Webster has enjoyed a commanding season in defence, even scoring two goals against Hibs, and his team-mates saw fit to vote him Players' Player of the Year.
