Hibees win the Edinburgh derby with a thrilling late winner
Hibernian's Ross Caldwell scores during the Clydesdale Bank Premier League match at Tynecastle Stadium, Edinburgh.

IT was a wet and miserable derby day in Gorgie.

So Hibs decided to light up this capital clash with some sunshine from Leith.

Ross Caldwell’s superb last-minute finish broke Hearts in front of their own fans.

Leigh Griffiths’ stunning 47th-minute free-kick to level the game was even better.

Those two magic moments were enough to give Hibees their first win at Tynecastle in FOUR years.

Darren Barr had put Hearts ahead a minute before the break. But the Jambos were second best, as they have been in all of this season’s derbies.

This year is the first since 2001 they have failed to win a single capital clash. Even though Pat Fenlon’s side left it late, the hosts could have no complaints at the outcome.

Hibs skipper James McPake was the major absentee when the teams were read out. With the defender nursing a knock, boss Fenlon decided he wasn’t worth the risk.

That meant a first start in central defence for 19-year-old Jordon Forster.

Fellow teenager Caldwell was also handed a chance up front. He was up against Barr, playing in his last home game as a Jambos player.

Fit-again Hearts striker Michael Ngoo also replaced winger Dale Carrick.

The sides had met four times already this season. Hibs came out on top in a Scottish Cup tie in November, with the three SPL games drawn.

It’s fair to say none of those tussles had been classics and there was little in the opening stages to suggest this would be any different.

Hibs carved out the first opening through Alex Harris in the eighth minute.

He crossed to the near post, where Hearts defender Andy Webster did well to get to the ball before Caldwell.

Hibs then almost gifted the Jambos the lead.

Keeper Ben Williams came to collect a Kevin McHattie corner, only for Jorge Claros to head it out of his hands.

That sparked a goalmouth scramble as Hearts looked to prod home the loose ball. But the Honduran recovered to hook Ngoo’s shot off the line and somehow the visitors managed to bundle the ball away to safety.

That apart, it was Hibs who were enjoying the best of the possession and in the 21st minute, they again went close to taking the lead.

Caldwell’s pass picked out Harris, who drilled a low shot towards Jamie MacDonald’s near post.

The keeper blocked the shot, but Hearts could only clear the ball back to Harris. The youngster fired in a low cross that Jamie Hamill had to clear off his own line.

Caldwell forced MacDonald into another decent save in the 28th minute as Hibs tried to up the ante.

The keeper was initially unsighted as his shot took a nick off Hamill on its way towards goal and MacDonald did well to turn the ball away.

At the other end, Jamie Walker curled a shot over Williams’ crossbar as half-time rapidly approached.

But with a minute to go it was the men in maroon who took the lead.

Hibs wanted a free-kick for a challenge on Kevin Thomson by Hamill.

But referee Steven McLean waved play on and the Jambos went on to force a corner.

Ngoo climbed to meet McHattie’s flag-kick, but his effort was cleared off the line by Tom Taiwo.

When the ball came back out though, Barr was on hand to turn it home from only four yards out. It was his first goal since scoring against Hibs in last season’s Scottish Cup Final.

As Hearts celebrated, a furious Fenlon confronted fourth official Kevin Clancy and when the teams left the field he stayed on to exchange words with whistler McLean.

Hibs were still nursing a sense of grievance when the second half got underway.

But it took them just two minutes to get the anger out of their system.

Mehdi Taouil’s foul on Harris gave Griffiths the chance to test MacDonald from fully 25 yards and the striker curled a glorious left-footer into the top corner.

It was a stunning 28th goal of the season from the PFA Young Player of the Year.

The celebrations were cut short by a smoke bomb which was thrown onto the pitch from the away end and the restart was delayed while stewards removed it.

When the game did finally get underway again, Griffiths could easily have put Hibs in the driving seat with a second.

Harris was involved in the action once again, hitting the byline and pulling the ball across goal.

But Hamill just did enough to put off Griffiths and divert the ball out for a corner.

Hamill then forced Williams into a save at the other end just before the hour-mark.

Walker fired a volley narrowly wide from the edge of the box soon after.

Paul Hanlon headed over from a Griffiths corner in the 72nd minute as both sides searched for a winner.

Hearts gaffer Gary Locke — in the dugout for his first capital derby — tried to turn the tide by sending on Carrick and David Smith for Ngoo and Taouil.

With six minutes to go Walker went down in the box after dodging three challenges. Hearts wanted a penalty but McLean correctly booked the winger for diving.

As the Jambos pushed forward, John Sutton only just failed to get on the end of a Smith cross.

But with a minute to go it was Hibs who delivered the killer blow.

Griffiths laid the ball into the path of substitute Scott Robertson, who appeared to be taken out by Webster, but he managed to lay the ball into the path of Caldwell.

From 12 yards he curled into the top left-hand corner of MacDonald’s net to send the away fans into raptures.
