Five-game Levein ban

James Traynor.

2 Feb 1993

CRAIG Levein's professional foul on Dundee United's Paddy Connolly has been punished severely, writes James Traynor.

The Hearts central defender was yesterday suspended for five matches, although he will be able to play in the Scottish Cup fourth-round tie against Dundee on Saturday.

The internationalist had been having a good match against United at Tannadice at the weekend until his late foul and his period of suspension will be longer than expected because of the totting-up procedure.

Levein misses one game automatically, but his increased number of disciplinary points means an additional four-match ban.

He will not play against Dundee at Dens Park tomorrow night, but can play in the cup-tie against the same team.

Thereafter, he will spectate at the games against Falkirk, Airdrie, and Rangers.

If Hearts beat Dundee in the cup Levein will miss the quarter-final, but if they lose he will not play in the premier- division match against Aberdeen.

It wasn't all bad news at Tynecastle yesterday when Nicky Walker, who has taken over in goal from Henry Smith, was voted Tartan Special player of the month of January.

Dunfermline assistant manager Gordon Wallace was yesterday fined £250 and banned from the touchline area for six months by the SFA.

Wallace appeared before the Referee Disciplinary Committee because of his comments to a linesman at the Scottish Cup third-round tie against Ayr on January 9.

The committee, during the four-hour meeting, carried out a mid-season analysis of the disciplinary figures.

SFA official Drew Herbison said later: "All clubs will be advised later in the week of the outcome of the meeting.

Letters to them will outline their position so far as discipline is concerned and will give the view of the association."
