Silver lining for Jambos

Rupert Connor.

HEARTS will finally get their hands on some silverware this afternoon by seeing off Rangers in today's Scottish Cup final.

I'm certain the punch-drunk Jambo fans, who've suffered more false starts than Linford Christie, will get off to a flyer at Parkhead and will be crying tears of joy rather than despair.

It seems fate has decreed that Walter Smith, the most successful Rangers manager ever, will end his Ibrox career empty-handed.

I sense that Hearts, the perennial bridesmaid, are for once ready to accept the leading role in this afternoon's showpiece.

Rangers are down following Celtic's title celebrations and I don't see them being strong enough to muster the energy needed to deliver Walter one last trophy before he goes.

Thriller

It won't be easy and if Hearts think they'll take the trophy from Rangers without a fight, they'll lose.

But I'm certain Jim Jefferies won't allow for complacency and he'll make sure his men battle every inch of the way.

If they do, I reckon the pace of Neil McCann will tip the balance in favour of the Gorgie men in a high-scoring thriller.

To be honest, even the stony-hearted couldn't grudge the Edinburgh side and their marvellous fans their day of glory.

The history of the famous club's trophy trail is awash with heartbreak which no football fan should be asked to bear.

That's why I'll be pleased to see the Scottish Cup wearing maroon-and- white ribbons at Parkhead today.
