Deadly Dariusz Adamczuk sealed Dundee's first win of the season with a second half double at Tynecastle.

The Polish midfielder netted deflected strikes in the 48th and 82nd minutes to shock Jim Jefferies' title hopefuls.

The win was no more than the Dens Park men deserved as they outplayed and out-thought a disappointing Hearts side, who face major problems before their midweek Cup Winners' Cup clash with Real Mallorca.

Tynecastle boss Jefferies made three changes to the starting line-up from the League Cup tie with Ross County, bringing in Jose Quitongo, Lee Makel and Derek Holmes to replace Stephane Adam, Thomas Flogel and Jim Hamilton.

But these switches seemed to make little impact on the performance of the Edinburgh side as they struggled to produce any flowing football.

Stephen Pressley and Neil McCann combined on the right to set up Steve Fulton, but the midfielder pulled his shot well wide.

Tempers were also starting to fray and Hearts striker Holmes and Dundee defender Willie Miller both found themselves booked within the first 15 minutes - contributing to the final tally of six.

Dundee had only one point to show for their season's effort so far, but clearly were not intimidated by their more fancied opponents.

They gradually grew in confidence in midfield and Adamczuk broke forward to crack in a 20 yard drive that Gilles Rousset was forced to push wide.

Hearts tried to step up the pressure before the interval through the supply line from Fulton on the left.

The midfielder swept in a high cross which Holmes leapt to meet with a looping header that Robert Douglas stretched to keep out.

Then Fulton picked out Gary Naysmith and the youngster made space for himself inside the box before firing a shot just wide.

Quitongo was next to threaten the visitors' rearguard and jinked past two defenders only to send a shot straight at Douglas.

However, Dundee stood firm and three minutes into the second half they took the lead - with a little help from luckless Hearts keeper Rousset.

Full-back Miller took a quick throw-in that caught out the home defence to allow Adamczuk to storm forward.

The midfielder cracked a shot with the outside of his right boot that struck the inside of the post and the back of Rousset's head before nestling in the net.

Dundee had keeper Douglas to thank in the 62nd minute when he saved brilliantly from substitude Adam after the Frenchman had met David Weir's fine cross.

Hearts then came within a whisker of equalising when Fulton's corner found its way to Pressley, but Douglas blocked his effort from point blank range.

And Dundee wrapped up a fine victory eight minutes from time when Adamczuk's shot flew through a crowd of players and cannoned into the net off Naysmith.
