Hearts (1) 3 Dundee (0) 0

Since Craig Levein left on Friday, John Robertson's has been the only name in the frame as far as the Hearts supporters and players are concerned.

"He has our respect," said captain Steven Pressley after Saturday's demolition of Dundee. "Robertson has shown at Livingston and Inverness that he can manage and motivate."

However, chairman George Foulkes will not be rushed: "Craig Levein was here for four years and we want the next manager to be around for a while, so it's better to take time and get it right."

There is also Vladimir Romanov to consult. The Lithuanian banker, the club's biggest shareholder, has promised to invest heavily and remains the fans' biggest hope of staying at Tynecastle. However, Romanov has promised to install former Russian Olympic coach Anatoly Byshovets as director of football, which might inhibit the new man.

They will also need a hefty chunk of the compensation from Leicester, for the 18 months on Levein's contract, to persuade the clans to show Robertson the low road out of the Highlands.

Levein is a seriously hard act to follow. On Saturday, Hearts' assistant manager, Peter Houston – who will stay as long as he's needed before rejoining Levein – watched as Dundee were given short shrift. Kevin McKenna's opening goal was supplemented by second-half strikes from Paul Hartley and Dennis Wyness.

Schalke will be a more difficult proposition. However, with Dutchman Mark De Vries set to return, Hearts may find the edge which eluded them at Feyenoord two weeks ago.
