Supporters urged to remember Somme heroes

HIBS fans were today urged to respect a tribute song to those who died at the Battle of the Somme which will be played at Tynecastle tonight.

Craig Herbertson and his band will be playing their hit record "Hearts of Glory" at the interval and producer Guntmar Feurstein is hoping the Hibees will recognise the significance of the song. "The song is a serious one about McCrae’s Battalion and commemorates the dead of Edinburgh," he said.

"As the song has Hearts in the title it would be understandable if fans of Hibs thought it was a partisan song, but it is in honour of all the young sportsmen who went to war and gave the ultimate sacrifice at the Battle of the Somme."

The song was played at the unveiling of the club’s memorial cairn at Contalmaison.

"There will be leaflets handed out to all fans before the game tonight explaining the background to the song," added Feurstein. "I appreciate the situation tonight but it would be appreciated if Hibs supporters didn’t boo."
