Queen's Park 0 Hearts 2

An Edgaras Jankauskas double was enough to see Hearts comfortably through to the third round of the CIS Insurance Cup, despite a spirited display from Queen's Park at Hampden Park.

The Bell's Third Division side battled to the end but the Bank of Scotland Premier League leaders were never in danger of losing the tie.

Lithuania international Jankauskas settled any early nerves for the Jambos with a 15th-minute opener before ensuring a safe passage into round three a minute before the interval.

Hearts manager George Burley kept his promise to hand his fringe players a taste of the action, making eight changes from the team which beat Aberdeen.

Goalkeeper Craig Gordon, Andy Webster and Jankauskas were the only players to hold onto their places.

The on-loan forward indicated early on he would be the dangerman for the SPL side when he opened the scoring on the quarter-hour mark.

Spiders' goalkeeper David Crawford did well to parry a Stephen Simmons effort, but was left with little chance when Jankauskas pounced on the rebound to tap home from close-range.

He had plenty of chances to add to his tally - nodding just wide and then failing to connect with a great ball from Jamie McAllister - but eventually found the net again a minute before the break.

McAllister was the provider and Jankauskas could not miss with the short-range shot at the back post.

The Glasgow part-timers had looked lively for a period, with Andy McGinty causing a panic in the Hearts defence.

But the biggest worry for Burley came with the loss of both Michal Pospisil and Neil MacFarlane to injury in the first half.

Deividas Cesnauskas could have put the game beyond Queen's Park after the interval when he teed up a long-range shot only to send the effort fizzing just past the upright.

Queens showed they had not entirely given up hope of a fightback when Mark Ferry burst forward and bulleted a header narrowly wide of the target.

Lee Wallace could have made the scoreline more flattering for Hearts with a couple of minutes to go only to send the effort across the face of goal and trundling harmlessly wide.

The hardy band of home fans were happy with the amateur side's battling display, but the Jambos fans returned to Edinburgh celebrating a fifth successive win this season.
