Hearts 4 - 0 Dunfermline Athletic

Saturday Apr 08 2006 03:00
The Jambos welcomed Dunfermline to East End Park with the hosts in the precarious position of having Rangers breathing down their necks, a mere three points behind the Edinburgh outfit in the race for the second Champions League spot in the SPL.

Hearts showed little signs of nerves as they breezed past The Pars 4-0 to set up what looks like a fantastic last game of the season as The Jambos travel along the M8 to meet Rangers at Ibrox.

There was a definite sense of urgency in the Tynecastle outfit as it took only 22 seconds before the hosts had their first effort on goal courtesy of a run and shot from Deividas Cesnauskis which whistled wide of the upright.

The Jambos came close again only minutes later when Saulius Mikoliunas decided to emulate his Lithuanian counterpart but could only watch in disbelief as Allan McGregor pulled off an fantastic one-handed save.

The Pars rearguard was breached in the sixth minute when Robbie Neilson launched a throw-in to the back of the six-yard box which the onrushing Michal Pospisil glanced into the back of the net.

Dunfermline had no answer for the superior technical prowess of the home side, and their failure to clear their lines led to their defence being breached for a second time in quick succession. The superb Paul Hartley swung a crisp cross into the box for Roman Bednar to meet with a looping header which snuck under the crossbar.

The visitors were on the ropes by this point and their heads dropped when Hearts notched their third. Mikoliunas picked up the ball 25 yards from goal in an innocuous position and attempted a weak drive at goal that went through a ruck of defenders and under keeper McGregor.

The Pars first real effort on goal came in the 60th minute from Andy Tod's header from a corner, but the defender's effort sailed narrowly over the bar.

The Jambos notched their fourth when Bruno Aguair's corner found the head of substitute Juho Makela, allowing the Finn to notch his first goal for the club with a six yard effort.

Dunfermline's frustrations spilled over with only minutes to go when Greg Ross was sent off for a terrible foul on Bruno Aguair.
