European draw

By Our Sports Staff
ARSENAL and Liverpool will discover who they will play in the third qualifying round of the Champions League when the draw takes place this morning.

They cannot meet each other but they may face Heart of Midlothian or Cork, but both need to win their second qualifying round ties.

*
Seeded AC Milan have been allowed into the tournament on a provisional basis after initially being banned for their part in Italy’s match-fixing scandal. Chelsea, Manchester United and Celtic are already in the group stage.

Former European Cup winners Ajax, Benfica and SV Hamburg are also seeded for the draw, as are Valencia, who were beaten finalists in 2000. AEK Athens, CSKA Moscow, Galatasaray, Lille, Shakhtar Donetsk and Slovan Liberec are also guaranteed to be seeded.

Staeua Bucharest, winners of the trophy in 1986, Dynamo Kiev and Levski Sofia will complete the line-up of seeds, provided they come through their second round qualifying ties. Should any of them be knocked out, their place as seeds will be taken by the team which eliminates them.

Meanwhile, Newcastle United and Gretna will also find out today who they will face in the Uefa Cup second round qualifying stage. They could be joined in the draw by Derry, Drogheda, Portadown, Glentoran, Llanelli and Rhyl.

The winners of the two-legged ties, to be played on August 10 and 24, will advance to the first round proper, where they are joined by Tottenham Hotspur, Blackburn Rovers, West Ham United, and Rangers. The winners from the first round will then participate in the group stage.
