Defender deal close

Tue, Aug 08 2006 13:01
Wigan are closing in on Hearts centre-half Andy Webster but admits he has to be careful in order to avoid a big fine.
Wigan have been chasing the Hearts star for most of the summer but the situation is difficult as he is using a new Fifa ruling to get away from Tynecastle where he has fallen out with the new owners and been frozen out of the team.

Webster still has 12 months to go on his contract but is looking to use a new ruling which allows players to leave a club three years into a four-year deal if they move abroad.

He said: "The Webster transfer is a difficult one, there are a lot of clauses involved. We are taking advice and have been working very hard behind the scenes to get it right - if we don't, we could land ourselves a big fine.

"Andy Webster is a good player. We need another centre-back here because I want two people for each position.

"We could do with a decision pretty quickly because the season is fast approaching and I'd like all my signings in by then - we can't wait forever," he told the Wigan Evening Post.
