BEING BEATEN BY THIS HEARTS TEAM WAS A BAD CASE OF DAYLIGHT ROBBERY

Police are investigating reports of a group of masked men riding out of Aberdeen last night on horseback.

Forget Derek Riordan getting his designer wardrobe knocked off. After all, how much can two dozen tracksuits really be worth? This was by far the biggest robbery of the Scottish football season.

For the best part of an hour of this game, Aberdeen were awesome. Abandoning the defensiveness of their last two appearances on live telly - Riordan was probably quite relieved he'd had his set pinched if the alternative was having to sit through the Dons' draw at Love Street - Jimmy Calderwood sent his players out packed with malicious intent.

The Dons dominated the first half to such an extent the travelling support, such as it was, must have been having flashbacks to the chasing their favourites received from AEK Athens.

Racing after every ball and steaming into every challenge, it was nonetheless what Aberdeen did once they attained possession that was most impressive.

The passing was terrific, the full range of skills was on display and every player wanted a piece of the action - for once it truly was just like watching Brazil. But while outside the box it may have been the Brazil of the 1970 World Cup Final, where it counted, it was more the version of 1998, rendered punchless by lone goal threat Ronaldo wandering around looking as if he was trying to remember if he'd left the iron on.

Nicholson and Miller both wasted good chances, Clark passed up the opportunity to miss one too by failing to pull the trigger, while Dempsey, Foster and Mackie were among those denied by desperate Hearts defending.

There could have been few complaints had Aberdeen gone in at the break 3-0 up, but then that would have involved the Dons scoring, and that's not their forte.

At Pittodrie, if you scored a hat-trick they'd name a stand after you. Net one for Hearts and they leave you sitting in it, as Juho Makela discovered.

It's goals that count, so to say the performance lacked nothing but goals is a bit pointless.

Oh, for a goal scorer.

I hear about this guy named Lovell who's supposed to be quite good, I wonder if he'd fancy coming to play for Aberdeen.

They'd be some team.
