Hibees chasing first League Cup win over city rivals

COLLEEN PATERSON

TONIGHT will be the first time in 50 years that Hearts and Hibs have faced one another in the League Cup - and the Easter Road outfit are still looking for their first win over their City rivals in the competition.

The two sides have been drawn together just twice, most recently in 1956, and the Jambos emerged victorious both times.

However, they have played one another a total of four times as the competition back then included a four-team round robin element and each team played the other three sides home and away.

The first clash was back in 1947, Hearts winning both of the matches 2-1, with Johnny Urquhart, Archie Kelly (2) and Davie Laing all scoring, although Hibs went on to win the league title that season.

In 1956, Hearts made home advantage pay as they cantered to a 6-1 win at Tynecastle and went on to beat them 2-1 on their home patch a fortnight later.

The Jambos have endured disappointment in the League Cup at Easter Road in more recent times, though, losing to Motherwell 3-2 after extra-time two seasons ago and also to St Johnstone 3-0 in October 1998.

However, Hearts did secure a 3-0 semi-final victory over Dundee at Easter Road in 1996 to clinch a final place before losing 4-3 to Rangers at Celtic Park.
