Webster will captain Scotland ‘B’ side in next week’s Dublin friendly

MARTIN GREIG November 09 2006

WALTER SMITH has named Wigan's Andy Webster as his captain for Scotland's 'B' international against the Republic of Ireland next week.

The 24-year-old has not played for the national team since the friendly defeat by Switzerland in March after a fall-out with Vladimir Romanov, the Hearts owner, when negotiations on a new contract at Tynecastle collapsed.

However, the defender will start at Dalymount Park next Tuesday after impressing with Wigan Athletic following his summer move. He has played in the last three games, against Manchester City, Fulham and Bolton, with his side scoring six goals with no reply.

Webster will be charged with attempting to shackle in-form Falkirk striker Anthony Stokes, who has been selected for the Irish squad. Stokes has scored a remarkable 10 goals in the last five games, including the equaliser against Celtic in their CIS Insurance Cup victory.

"The B international is a useful exercise for players who fall between the recent under-21 squads and the full national squad," Smith said. "It gives me an opportunity to bring in the younger players and see what they can do.

"Andy Webster will get much-needed match practice, at a time when he is starting to play well for Wigan after his long absence. He is the most experienced player in the squad with 22 caps and will captain the team."

There are slots for the Hibs midfield trio of Scott Brown, Kevin Thomson and Michael Stewart, while Kilmarnock pair Gordon Greer and Steven Naismith are also included.

Steven Smith's impressive form at left-back for Rangers has earned him a call-up, while Ibrox team-mate Charlie Adam will also have the chance to impress after scoring four goals in his last five games.
