Hearts coach ready for the frayMARTIN McMILLAN November 16 2006 Eugenijus Riabovas, the latest caretaker coach of Hearts, last night said he was ready to guide the club out of one of the most turbulent periods in its 132-year history. Riabovas, 55, who recently steered FBK Kaunas to the Lithuanian title, will become the seventh man in charge during owner Vladimir Romanov's 21-month rule. He is also the third to switch from Kaunas. With Valdas Ivanauskas on leave because of ill health, Eduard Malofeev took over the reins but he is now leaving to pursue the UEFA pro licence required by the SFA to take the job permanently. Malofeev was Ivanauskas' successor and Riabovas' predecessor at FBK Kaunas. Riabovas, who watched from the dugout as Hearts drew 1-1 at Falkirk this week, is to begin work on Monday after Malofeev again leads the team for Sunday's game against Rangers. Riabovas, who insists his role is only temporary, said: "Hearts have a very strong team and I think I'm good enough to be the Hearts coach. There are good trainers and bad trainers and I think I'm a good trainer. "I've been here in Scotland for around two weeks now, just watching. I know that Hearts have been doing fairly well recently. I hope that continues." There was good news for the coach when Craig Gordon's agent yesterday said the goalkeeper had no intention of quitting Hearts in the near future. Meanwhile, the SFA have confirmed that Malofeev faces a two-match touchline ban if he returns to the dugout. The Belarussian was sent to the stand during the game Falkirk after manhandling fourth official John McKendrick in the wake of Russell Latapy's equaliser. |
