Pressley in clash over sackings

ROB ROBERTSON November 21 2006

Steven Pressley, the Hearts captain, did not agree with the sacking of either George Burley or Graham Rix, it was revealed last night. His views, included in a foreword to the book Believe, about the Hearts crisis, are certain to add to the growing rift between the Scottish internationalist and club owner Vladimir Romanov.

Last month, Pressley stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Craig Gordon and Paul Hartley to voice concern at the way the Lithuanian multi-millionaire was running the club.

However, that led to an attempt by the Lithuanian players in the squad to have him ousted as captain. When he found out about it, he stepped down as captain for the match against Falkirk and found himself on the bench for the game against Rangers last Sunday.

Although Pressley was against the sackings of Burley and Rix, he also praises Romanov at length for saving the club and pumping cash into it, during his foreword.

Pressley wrote: "George [Burley] had a great rapport with the players; we had grown to trust him, and we were extremely disappointed at what occurred. I did not agree with the decision, but, on the other hand, I accepted it because Mr Romanov is the man who is taking us forward.

"There have been other decisions made in the past that I have disagreed with, but this club would not be where it is without Mr Romanov's backing and influence."

He said that, in the weeks that followed, there was uncertainty in the dressing-room and he praised the players for their attitude during that time.

Pressley felt that sacking Rix was the wrong decision but kept his feelings to himself at the time.

"I privately felt that Mr Romanov had made the wrong decision, because I thought the last thing we needed was more instability at that time," he wrote.
