Levein factfileMIKE AITKEN Full name: Craig William Levein. Born: 22 October 1964, in Dunfermline. Education: Inverkeithing High School, Fife. Position: defender. First clubs: Dalgety Bay, Leven Royals and Inverkeithing under-16s. Junior club: Lochore Welfare. First senior club: Cowdenbeath, 1981-83. Played 60 games, scored 0 goals. Other senior club: Hearts, 1983-97, whom he joined for a £30,000 transfer fee. Played 326 league games, scored 15 goals. Only eight Hearts players have played more league games (Gary Mackay 515, John Robertson 512, Henry Smith 476, Jim Cruickshank 394, Walter Kidd 367, John Cumming 359, Alan Anderson 352, John Colquhoun 346). Scotland debut: 1-0 win against Argentina at Hampden Park in a friendly international played in March 1990. Total Scotland caps: 16, won from 1990 to 1994, including 1990 World Cup finals in Italy. Personal honours: SPFA Young Player of the Year, 1985 & 1986. Lowest points: twice suffering serious knee ligament injuries, the second ending his playing career; and receiving a 12-game ban for punching his team-mate Graeme Hogg during a friendly match away to Raith Rovers. Coaching career: after retirement as a player in 1995, had spells in a coaching role with Hearts and Livingston. Into management: appointed manager of Third Division side Cowdenbeath in 1997. During his tenure, the club averaged 1.3 points per game in an impressive transformation from bottom-feeders to eventual promotion contenders. Back at Hearts: in December 2000, Levein was tempted back to Tynecastle to take over from Jim Jefferies. Heading south: as Hearts hit troubled waters over the potential sale of Tynecastle, Levein left to accept the offer of the manager's post at Leicester City in October 2004. Averaged 1.5 points per match at Hearts. Sacked: halfway through season 2005/06, with Leicester caught in a relegation struggle, Levein was removed from his position. Points average was 1.2 per match. Return to football: the chance to manage the team he supported as a boy, Raith Rovers, proved too much to resist in September 2006 - although he warned the Second Division club that he might only be there for a matter of weeks. Tangerine dream: back in the SPL after accepting the manager's job and a two-and-a-half year contract at Dundee United on 30 October 2006, replacing the departed Craig Brewster. ![]() Taken from the Scotsman |
