Icelander denies he is involved in Hearts bid

CLAIMS that the Icelandic billionaire Thor Bjorgolfsson is funding a takeover bid for Hearts have been scotched.

A television report in the businessman's homeland linked Bjorgolfsson to an attempted buyout of Vladimir Romanov's 80.01 per cent shareholding in the Gorgie club.

However, a spokesman for Bjorgolfsson said yesterday: "We wish to make it clear that Thor Bjorgolfsson has no involvement in a bid for Heart of Midlothian Football Club as was reported in error on 5 February 2007."

The Icelander is the son of Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson, who was behind the recent takeover of West Ham United, and his business interests have included brewing and banking.

Although Bjorgolfsson is not involved, an offer to buy out Romanov has been submitted by Pat Munro, the Edinburgh businessman. Munro claims he has financial backing from unnamed Icelandic and Middle Eastern sources but the bid has been dismissed out of hand by Hearts.

Fred Wood, Munro's associate, said: "The offer is in, but Romanov is blanking Pat at the moment."
