Hearts confirm signing of Argentinian ace Screpis

By BARRY ANDERSON
HEARTS have confirmed the signing of Fernando Screpis from FBK Kaunas, a story broken first in Wednesday's Evening News.
The 28-year-old has a three-and-a-half-year contract which he signed during a trial period in Austria last summer. He will train at Riccarton for the first time tomorrow morning.

Screpis, an Argentinian who holds an Italian passport was left in limbo by Hearts this month after his contract took effect on January 1. He was unable to obtain confirmation on whether the club wanted him and was prepared to lodge an official
complaint with FIFA, however he expressed his relief to finally join up at Tynecastle.

"I am very happy to be here," said Screpis. "This is a very important step for my career and will do my best for the team. Hearts is a great club and I want to bring trophies to Tynecastle. I can't wait to get started and it's an exciting time for me."

The left-sided midfielder played in Hearts' friendly win over Austria Vienna last summer during his trial but agreed to spend six months with Vladimir Romanov-sponsored Kaunas before defecting to Scotland.

Caretaker manager Stephen Frail said today: "He joined us in Austria back in pre-season last summer and showed his quality. He'll train with us tomorrow and we'll have a chance to assess his fitness."

Meanwhile, Lithuanian goalkeeper Eduardas Kurskis will remain at Tynecastle until the end of the season after extending his loan from Kaunas.
