Hearts quest for a European spot fizzled out tonight after a share f the spoils at Tynecastle. The manager through everything he had at Peter Houston's side but in the end just could not get that elusvie goal.

Jim Jefferies made three changes to the side that beat Hibs at Easter Road on Saturday. Obua and Kingston both missed out due to suspension and Gary Glen made way for Calum Elliot.

Hearts first chance of note came after 14 minutes through some splendid play by Lee Wallace down the left wing. The player's player of the year looped a ball into the box for Calum Elliot, whose ball across goal just eluded Suso and Ruben Palazuelos at the back post. Just minutes later Elliot was in on the act again with a delightful flick towards goal, this time drifting wide.

Prince Buaben nearly caused the Jambos a problem after 20 minutes when his free-kick looped dangerously in front of goal, Jamie MacDonald managing to hold the ball well.

Dundee Utd started to gain some ascendency in the match and came close to opening the scoring through Scot Robertson. Goodwillie's pass found Robertson sandwiched between Zaliukas and Bouzid and his resulting shot was pushed away by MacDonald back into the Utd mans path, his second shot eventually deflected for a corner.

Hearts found it increasingly difficult to break through the Utd defence although the work rate of the players could not be faulted.

The boys in marron were out a few minutes before Dundee Utd ahead of the start of the second half showing their keenness to step their efforts up a gear.

Minutes into the half an excellent ball whipped in by Eggert Jonsson found the head of Calum Elliot; unfortunately Calum's header rebounded of the body of Gary Kenneth.

The Jambos came closest to an opener after Suso's ball paved the way for a screaming shot from Templeton; Banks did well to parry the ball wide. This rallied the Tynecastle crowd and just moments later they were on their feet again as Ryan Stevenson unleashed a shot which blasted high.

As news filtered through of the unbelievable scoreline at Fir Park the fans tried to motivate the Hearts boys for one last push this season, and a push they got. Smith, Glen, Elliot and Bouzid were all pushed up front by Jim Jefferies.

Gordon Smith had his chance first with a shot form just inside the area which was blocked by one of the many tangerine shirts. Next up was Gary Glen who zigged and zagged through United's defence before running out of options and missing the chance to get his shot in on goal.

In the penultimate game of the season Hearts gave everything they had and now face a final day game of the 2009/10 season at home to Celtic on Sunday.
