Barr makes apology for Hearts cup shocker

DARREN BARR apologised to Hearts supporters today for the poor defending that cost their team a place in the Co-operative Insurance Cup quarter-finals.
The Tynecastle side crashed out of the competition at the hands of First Division Falkirk, despite leading 3-2 as the game entered the final 12 minutes.

Ryan Flynn levelled for the Bairns before Mark Stewart hit a dramatic injury-time winner at th e Falkirk Stadium and Barr admitted that the defending had been far from good enough.

Almost 2,000 Hearts fans made the trip and the former Falkirk player said: "We defended poorly as a team but my own performance wasn't up to scratch either, I know that.

"It's hard to put a finger on why, but I think it more than played a part in a couple of the goals that we lost.

"At 2-0 down we were still positive, there was never any chance of us giving up and we came back really well in the second half and did brilliantly to draw level and then go in front.

"After that it was just horrible and I can only apologise to the fans for the way it worked out."

Following the defeat to Falkirk, Hearts manager Jim Jefferies may make changes to his starting line-up for this weekend's home SPL game against Motherwell and Rudi Skacel is likely to make his debut for the second time, although he may not start the game.

Jefferies has decided not to appeal Craig Thomson's red card for stamping against Falkirk and, because the dismissal was for violent conduct, Thomson will be banned for the Motherwell game rather than the first game of next season's League Cup. He has also gone through the disciplinary points barrier and will miss the October 16 trip to Aberdeen.
