Jason Thomson back at Tynie but still in dark over future

JASON THOMSON has returned to Hearts after completing a six-month loan period at Dunfermline but remains in the dark about his immediate future.

The full-back is surplus to requirements at Tynecastle despite being contracted until May. He is free to find another club but, if he can’t do so during the January transfer window, faces the prospect of minimal first-team football until he becomes a free agent in the summer.

Hearts have told Thomson, 24, that he can leave for no fee but the player has had little chance to impress any prospective suitors recently due to injury problems. He only returned from a groin complaint in Dunfermline’s SPL defeat by St Johnstone on Christmas Eve and his loan at East End Park has now expired. Contractually he is obliged to go back to Hearts and train at Riccarton whilst awaiting the chance to move clubs. Jamie Hamill, Ryan McGowan and Darren Barr are all ahead of him in the first-team pecking order for his favoured right-back role and he has resigned himself to leaving when his contract expires, if not before.

Thomson is a product of the Hearts youth academy who made his first-team debut at the tender age of 17 in March 2005. Failure to establish himself as a first-team regular prompted a season-long loan to Livingston in 2006 before this year’s short-term move to Dunfermline.
