TOP DOGS in Edinburgh and top six place secured.

This certainly won't go down as Hearts' most memorable derby triumph.

But when there are bragging rights up for grabs it doesn't matter how you get them.

All that matters to Jambos fans is that they've now gone ten derbies without defeat.

Unless these two meet in the Scottish Cup Final it will be well into next season before Hibs can do anything about it.

And the victory also means Paulo Sergio's side will finish in the top half of the table.

Two moments of magic from Craig Beattie and then Suso Santana were the difference.

But Pat Fenlon's men will feel aggrieved they didn't take at least a point after they dominated the second half.

The defeat keeps them just four points above bottom club Dunfermline.

They'll no doubt await the appointment of a new boss at East End Park today with keen interest.

Both managers appeared to go for it with team selections filled with attacking players.Sergio went with Craig Beattie and Stephen Elliott in attack.

Mehdi Taouil, Rudi Skacel and Andrew Driver were all urged to offer support.

Fenlon paired strikers Leigh Griffiths and Roy O'Donovan together. Lewis Stevenson sat back as Tom Soares and David Wotherspoon bombed on.

It was Griffiths had the first chance after three minutes.

The striker spun and fired a shot that Jamie MacDonald did well to palm away.

It probably wouldn't have counted with Soares stuck in an offside position. But it gave them an immediate early lift.

However, Fenlon was forced into an early change when Skacel and George Francomb clashed heads.

The Czech managed to carry on with a shiner of a black eye but Francomb stayed inside and was replaced by Matt Doherty.

Soares flicked an Ian Black free kick over his own bar as Hearts went close for the first time. Andy Webster then saw a header from a Danny Grainger corner saved well by Graham Stack.

And worryingly for Hibs Webster was allowed another free header from a Grainger ball just a minute later but this time failed to make any meaningful contact.

Grainger then tested Stack with a long-range effort that the keeper dealt with easily.

But Hibs stormed back and should have taken the lead after 26 minutes.

Griffiths' clever pass played in Pa Kujabi, who had got in behind Jamie Hamill.

When he pulled the ball back O'Donovan was inches away from a decisive touch.

And it was a chance Hibs would rue as Hearts went up the park and took the lead.

Black went past two players before playing a crossfield ball into the path of Beattie. His touch was too good for sub Doherty, who briefly thought about bringing him down.

And Beattie allowed Stack to advance before clipping the ball into the keeper's bottom left hand corner from 15 yards.

He went close with a volley soon after when Paul Hanlon made a mess of dealing with a long ball from Skacel.

Stack and Elliott required treatment in the 39th minute after the keeper raced off his line to deny the Irishman as he tried to latch onto another Black through ball.

James McPake then did well to block a Black shot after a corner from Grainger.

But Hearts were dealt a blow two minutes before the break when Elliott hobbled off. The striker had failed to recover from the hip injury he sustained in his collision with Stack.

And Scott Robinson replaced him as Sergio pushed Skacel up to support Beattie.

Hibs threatened right after the restart with a Wotherspoon free kick that MacDonald didn't deal with convincingly.

And they went close again two minutes later after Webster had fouled Soares, who had switched to Hibs left.

This time Doherty's header beat the keeper but not Beattie who hooked the ball off the line.

But it was better from Hibs, who had Hearts pegged back.

Griffiths blazed a shot wide, then kissed the badge on his shirt after being jeered by the home support.

Fenlon then threw on Garry O'Connor with Wotherspoon going off. Griffiths' frustration showed again when he fired a free kick over MacDonald's bar after 72 minutes. Webster then did well to charge down a shot from the striker a minute later.

Black was then booked for throwing the ball away after 78 minutes after being caught in possession by Lewis Stevenson.

He was immediately subbed for Ryan McGowan while Eoin Doyle replaced O'Donovan in attack for Hibernian.

Stevenson was booked for catching McGowan late.

O'Connor wasted a good free-kick after Darren Barr's foul on Doyle. He then got a yellow card for taking out Robinson.

And as Hibs pressed in injury time they were caught out.

Santana, who had replaced Skacel, raced at goal as Fenlon's men scrambled back. He cut inside Jorge Claros before firing a shot beyond Stack's reach.
