Hearts player ratings

How the Tynecastle squad performed in the first leg tonight:

Jamie MacDonald - The Gorgie keeper made a good early save from Charlie Adam and thwarted Raheem Sterling just after the break. 7/10.

Ryan McGowan - After winning his first Australia cap last week against Scotland, he was lucky he did not put though his own goal in the first half in an attempt to divert danger but put in a great effort. 8.

Marius Zaliukas - The Jambos skipper passed a late fitness test and looked steady enough, especially in the air. 6.

Andy Webster - One of the more experienced players in the Gorgie side, the Scotland defender was mostly solid and unlucky to score an own goal. 6.

Danny Grainger - Tried to get forward down the left but was missing when Martin Kelly got the cross in for the goal. 5.

Darren Barr - Sitting in front of the defence, the former Falkirk defender did some good defensive work but was more reticent after he was booked in the first half for a foul on Charlie Adam. 5.

Mehdi Taouil - Brave on the ball but gave possession away or miscontrolled on several occasions in the first half and was lucky not to be punished on each occasion. 6.

Callum Paterson - Former Hearts youth player, the youngster was not afraid to take on Jack Robinson down the right flank with some success. Had a good shot saved by Pepe Reina in the closing stages. 6.

David Templeton - Got the Jambos fans out of their seats at times in the first-half, twice with left-footed drives which cleared the bar. 8.

Arvydas Novikovas - Great dipping drive in the first half saved by Reina, and another effort from distance after the break. Was replaced by Dale Carrick. 6.

John Sutton - Won his fair share in the air and drove wide in the first half as Hearts pressed but faded after the break. 6.

SUBSTITUTES

Andrew Driver - Replaced David Templeton just after Liverpool scored and should have levelled with minutes remaining but his turn and shot was too weak to worry Pepe Reina. 5.

Dale Carrick - another one from the Hearts Academy, the 18-year-old came on for Novikovas later in the game. 5.

Scott Robinson - Came on for Darren Barr but too late to make a difference. 5.
