Derby joy for Wee Jambos

25.10.2012

Hearts U20s beat Hibs U20s 1-0 last night in the first 'wee derby' of the season.

Gordon Smith scored the only goal of the game in the first half as Darren Murray's side continue to push up the league table.

The Wee Jambos lined up with Peter Enckelman in goals and he, along with Dylan McGowan and Gordon Smith, made up the quota of three overage players. Scott Robinson and Jason Holt completed a midfield three with recent first team substitute Callum Tapping.

Hibs fielded three overage players of their own; goalkeeper Sean Murdoch, Lewis Stevenson and Pa Kujabi.

It was the home 'keeper who was the quieter of the two, as Enckelman didn't have a save to make during the entire game as Hearts largely dominated proceedings.

The breakthrough came after only four minutes, when Hibs' Harry Monaghan mishit a pass-back to his 'keeper which allowed Smith to nip in and slot the ball home into an empty net.

Robinson came close to doubling the lead in the second half with a set piece and Brad McKay had a header cleared of the line, as the Wee Jambos saw out the game to claim all three points.

The win takes Darren Murray's boys into the top half of the Clydesdale Bank U20s League and above Hibs. Next up is a trip to Paisley to take on St Mirren on Tuesday 6th November.
