PETER HOUSTON is poised to become Hearts’ new boss.

And Housty will be given the task of trying to win the League Cup in his FIRST game in charge.

SunSport understands that Houston is now the only name in the frame for a 14-month deal.

If terms are agreed Houston is expected to take training on Monday before being officially unveiled.

He is unlikely to take over before tomorrow’s Edinburgh derby with Hibs.

Interim boss Gary Locke is expected to pick the Hearts side that plays at Easter Road.

But Houston could be in the Hampden dugout for the League Cup Final against St Mirren next weekend.

It is a chance to return to the club where he began his coaching career.

Houston first joined Hearts as a coach under Jim Jefferies in 1995.

He stepped in as caretaker manager when Jeff quit for Bradford in 2000.

And he became assistant boss at Tynecastle when Craig Levein was appointed.

Houston followed Levein to Leicester in 2004 and then to Tannadice in 2006.
