How the cup final will be won and lost

Mar 16 2013 by Jeff Holmes, Paisley Daily Express

Steven Thompson v Andy Webster

Big Thommo may be in the twilight of his career but he has been in fine form for Saints again this season, banging in 14 SPL goals.

The former Dundee United, Rangers, Cardiff and Burnley star relishes the big stage...and a visit to Hampden will suit him down to the ground.

His battle with Webster could be crucial to the outcome of the big match.

Neither player shirks from the physical side of the game, so referee Craig Thomson could be in for a busy time.

Paul McGowan v Mehdi Taouil

The midfield area will be another key battleground and, in McGowan, Saints could well have an ace in their pack.

He has shone brightly since joining the Buddies from Celtic and has the potential to be the star of the show tomorrow.

However, former Kilmarnock midfielder Taouil knows a trick or two and will need to be closely watched. The French-born Moroccan international will be hoping to pull the strings for Hearts.

Marc McAusland v Michael Ngoo

Saints defender ‘Cheesy’ will be keen to keep loan star Ngoo quiet at the national stadium.

A string of steady performances have meant McAusland has been one of the first names on Danny Lennon’s teamsheet this season.

But he will face a serious physical test from Ngoo tomorrow afternoon.

The powerful striker has made a big impression since joining the Jambos from Liverpool on a short-term deal.
