Time running out for Hartley

MARTIN McMILLAN July 06 2006

Paul Hartley is doubtful for Hearts' Champions League qualifier against Shakhtyor Soligorsk or Siroki Brijeglater later this month.

The Scotland midfielder is struggling with a persistent groin injury and has been unable to train with the squad at their pre-season camp in Austria.
Hearts will face either the Belarussians or the Bosnians in the second qualifying round of the competition, with the first leg at Murrayfield on July 26.

Valdas Ivanauskas, the Hearts head coach, conceded yesterday that the outlook for Hartley was not good.
He said: "It is very, very bad news. It is so difficult to say how long he will be out with these kind of injuries.
"We need Paul, the team needs Paul, but we will not take a risk with him. If we take a chance, he could then be out for a long time if he is not ready. I don't know how long he will be out, as it is too early to say, but I have a bad feeling."

lAn 83rd-minute goal by record signing Mirsad Beslija earned Hearts a 1-1 draw with LASK Linz in Austria last night. The visitors were without Craig Gordon, Ibrahim Tall, Paul Hartley, Roman Bednar and Michal Pospisil, affording chances to Nerijus Barasa and Lee Wallace.
Valdas Ivanauskas' side continue their pre-season build-up against Spartak Trnava, from Slovakia, on Saturday.
