Skacel ready to fire Saints back into Premiership

MARTIN McMILLAN

Rudi Skacel has set his sights on shooting Southampton to the English Premiership after confessing he was always going to sign for the Saints this summer because of his relationship with manager George Burley.

The Czech midfielder's pursuit of a move away from Hearts finally came to fruition on Saturday as the 27-year-old was unveiled before Southampton's 1-1 draw with his former club Panathinaikos.

The player, signed by Hearts a year ago on a loan deal from Marseille, has earned the Tynecastle outfit an impressive £1.6m pay-day after they took up an option to buy out the remainder of his contract with the French giants.
Skacel admits he is now eager to put the frustrations of the protracted move to the south coast behind him and resurrect the blistering form which saw him score seven goals in his first seven games at Hearts under Burley.

He said: "I have waited a long time for this day. It has been a difficult couple of months but I am here and I am happy, hopefully for a long time. I don't care now that it has taken a long time. The important thing is I am here.
I have been linked with a few clubs but Southampton was my only choice. It was important for me to sign for George Burley.

"I know him and his staff well and I trust them. He is a fantastic manager and now I just want to help Southampton win promotion. I have come here to play Premiership football.
"I enjoyed my time at Hearts, I liked them a lot. It was an amazing season for everyone but that is history now and I am here to help my new team."
