Strachan expects quick answer from Pressley

MARTIN GREIG December 16 2006

Gordon Strachan, the Celtic manager, could find out on Monday if Steven Pressley will join the Parkhead side in January. The former Hearts captain recently reached an "amicable agreement" to leave the Edinburgh club in the wake of his criticism of majority shareholder Vladimir Romanov.

Pressley was invited to Celtic Park last Monday for an informal chat with Strachan, who briefly played for Coventry at the same time as the 33-year-old Scotland defender. "Steven Pressley and I have known each other for a long time," said Strachan. "We thought we would get together for a chat on Monday and it was great. We were sitting there talking about football and what we have been doing the last few years and seeing if there was something that could be done to get us working together again.

"It was nothing about finances, it was more along the lines of 'it might be all right for you, it might be all right for me, so let's talk about it', and Steven said he would get back to me in about a week's time. It was actually nice to chat to him again."

Pressley will have no shortage of offers for his services. Rangers are also reported to be interested and he has been linked with both Premiership clubs and Championship clubs down south. Southampton, under his former Hearts coach George Burley, have also registered their interest and a move to the south coast may prove appealing.

Pressley and Burley formed a close working relationship during their brief time together at the start of last season and his former Tynecastle teammate, Rudi Skacel, is also on the books at St Mary's.

The defender's decision on his future has been delayed by his wife giving birth this week and he is likely to announce his next port of call at the start of the week. Strachan denied that Pressley's age would be an obstacle to him choosing Celtic over his other suitors. "I think I've proved that age is not a problem for me," he added.
