KEEPING GORDON OUT WILL COST US MILLIONS

By Alan Marshall

HEARTS fans fear their club will lose millions unless Vladimir Romanov brings Craig Gordon back in from the cold immediately.

The 24-year-old Scotland No.1 has been left out for the last three matches, sitting on the bench for Saturday's 1-0 Scottish Cup defeat at Dunfermline.

Fans vented their anger at the final whistle at East End Park, with some protesting outside as the cup holders crashed out.

Supporters expect Gordon to leave in the summer - with the English Premiership his likely destination - but know the club could throw away millions if they don't field their most saleable asset.

Derek Watson, secretary of the Hearts Supporters' Trust, said: "Everyone knows Craig is going to go at the end of the season so he is going to have to play him.

"If Romanov doesn't play him he will lose market value.

"Steve Banks has done well in his place but Craig is an established international goalkeeper.

It's silly not to play him. "Romanov will not want to lose millions in value on him but that could happen if he's not playing.

"At the end of the day we're out of the cups but have a reasonable league position despite a lot of changes.

"Some of the changes have been unbelievable and there was a lot of criticism for Saturday's team selection.

"It's how the team settles down from here that is important. The whole club is a rebuilding exercise.

"If we don't get a UEFA Cup spot or a Champions League qualifying place it's going to be a bad season.

"It's important we at least get that, then the season would still be seen as a success."

Watson is not convinced by talk of a proposed consortium takeover to buy out Romanov's 80.01 per cent shareholding.

Edinburgh businessmen Pat Munro and Fred Wood are seeking financial help from Icelandic billionaire Thor Bjorgolfsson to wrest control from the Lithuanian.

Watson said: "It seems all talk. It would be interesting it if was true as he seems a very rich Icelander but we're taking it with a pinch of salt.

"Change for the sake of change is not always ideal."
